"My mission as an artist is to create a world of vibrant colors, life, symbolism and subtle mystery. The work is a style of modern art that combines the impression of reality with my expression of inherent meanings of subject. I work to create an energy of the subject that can be appreciated and savored. I start with a simple yet dramatic layout that will exemplify my subject." -DePaula (Artist Statement)
DePaula - The Island Artist
An Artist's Biography
As a young boy he lived a modest lifestyle. His early years were spent traveling from city to city and flea market to flea market. His parents during this time were entrepreneurs, trying hard to establish a new business. Finally, after moving to the Florida Keys, their business, a jewelry store, was a success. William grew up in the islands of the Florida Keys and in the environment of a jewelry store.
William DePaula would spend most of his time with art, drawing on any scrap of
paper he could find. As a child he was known for making works of art out of
napkins more than actually using them. In school, DePaula would draw and paint
whatever he was learning about. If the subject of the day was reptiles, out
would come pictures of alligators and turtles. Even as a boy, DePaula identified
what impression the subject he created made, and brought it to life on paper.
William would work at his parents’ store and eventually became a gemologist.
All the while, DePaula would be making works of art to exhibit and sell. You can
find DePaula’s work in museums in India and Aruba. DePaula wanted his artwork
to reach more people than only those who would go to a museum. It was time for
the vibrant colors and rich impressions to be accessible to the people. William
started ArtedePaula, where his art could be seen and enjoyed not only as framed
art, but as apparel and skateboards.
